Results of 3rd Asian Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (AGKF) Championships 2010

Two of our Association members (Mr Vigan Mensah and Master Nelson Ngumo) representng IKGR (Singapore) participated in the 3rd Asian Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (AGKF) held from

2-4 Dec 10 in Nepal . They managed to bag 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. In addition the team clinched the Sportsman Award for the Mens Individual Kumite and came in 3rd placing overall .

Results from 1st KUS Schools Tournament 2010

Members of our Association participated in 1st KUS Schools Tournament 2010 held on 28 Nov 10 at SKA Dojo. The Association bagged 4 Golds, 5 Silvers and 7 Bronzes.

IKGR Training Camp & Championships 2010

Our Association participated in the IKGR Training Camp & Championships 2010 that was held at Singapore Polytechnic on 18 Sep 10. The Association managed to clinch several medals from the championships. Here are some pictures from that event:

1st KUS Karate-Do Invitational Championships 2010 (POST EVENT)

Our Association managed to clinch one GOLD, one SILVER and 2 BRONZES. Congratulations to our medalists.

Besides winning medals, our Association also supported the event by providing table & court officials (the people who were responsible for keeping track of scores, match announcements and getting participants ready for their matches), Referees & Judges. More details can be found here:

1st KUS Karate-Do Invitational Championships 2010

About Us

Welcome to the Blessed Sacrament Church (Singapore) Goju-Ryu Karate-do Club, or Goju@BSC for short.

Our Mission is to teach and impart Goju-Ryu Karate-do in a Christ-centred, safe and an enjoyable manner to individuals who want to improve their fitness, well-being, self-confidence, character and discipline.

The BSC Goju-Ryu Karate-do Club is a branch dojo of parent association, Goju-Ryu Karate-do Seiwa-Kai (Singapore), which is a registered society and an affiliate of the Singapore Karate-do Federation (SKF). The other association dojos include: Honbu(@SP), Singapore Polytechnic, Cavendish Park and Gek Poh Ville CC.

What is Goju-Ryu Karate-Do?

Karate (meaning 'empty-hand'), is a form of self-defence system that is a fusion of native fighting systems from Okinawa and Chinese boxing from mainland China. Karate later spread to Japan, popularised and was accepted as one of the Japanese Budo martial arts such as Kendo, Judo and Akido.

Goju-Ryu (meaning 'Hard-Soft style') is one of the major styles of karate which specialises in circular striking techniques and close-quarter combat.

In learning & training Karate-do ('Way of Empty Hand') , there is no age limit, as this learning is a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. It is fundamentally, disciplining one's mind, body and soul.

Benefits of Training Karate-Do

For Young Childen (aged 6-8 years) , lessons are focused on etiquette, social interaction, awareness, self-defense, balance, communicative skills, building confidence and more.

For Children (aged 9-12 years) and Teenagers (aged 13 and above), lessons are based on a toned down version of the adult program. Again an excellent way to boost confidence, discipline, concentration, perseverance and of course learning how to protect themselves.

For Adults, lessons are focused on learning the techniques and concepts of traditional Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate-do e.g. effective self-defense, kata (forms), kumite (sparring), joint locks, throws and takedowns.

In addition, students will have opportunities to train for and participate in local or/and overseas tournaments in either the Kata or/and Kumite categories. This is the "Sport Karate" side which emphasises agility, speed, endurance, technical & tactical factors.

Senior Grade Class (NEW)

Introduction
Since Jul 09, under the direction of the Association's Chief Instructor (CI), the Association has started a separate training programme for Senior Grade students.

Aims
The aims of the Senior Grade Class are

a. To place more focus on traditional Goju-Ryu training based on Yamaguchi Goju-Kai format
b. To improve the overall technical competency of Senior Grade students
c. To better prepare Senior Grade students for Kyu or DAN grading tests

Class Schedules
Day/Time: Mondays, 1900- 2100hrs
Venue: Singapore Polytechnic

Requirements
The requirements for Senior Grade class are

a. Students must be 2nd Kyu and above, and must be aged 16years & above. (Note: Senior Grade class for students under 16years would be considered at a later stage)
b. Students taking 1st Kyu or DAN grading tests must attend the Senior Grade class. Attendance will be taken.
c. Association Membership Fees and applicable Training Fees must be paid up.
